Global workforce reality check

Global workforce reality check

The ADP Global Workforce View 2024, based on a survey of nearly 38,000 workers across 34 countries, highlights a global employment paradox: while job numbers are at record highs, 57% of workers report living paycheck to paycheck. Even among full-time employees, 54% are financially stretched, underscoring a gap between employment and economic well-being.

To cope, many workers are taking on side jobs — 23% globally, with 34% in the Middle East and Africa. Yet multiple incomes don’t necessarily offer relief: 59% of those with two jobs and 61% with three or more still struggle financially. While 51% of dual-job holders cite essential expenses as their main reason, others aim to save for specific costs (49%), build savings (40%), gain experience (35%), or fund education (27%).

Younger workers, particularly those under 40, are more likely to work extra jobs to upskill or gain experience, signalling both ambition and financial strain. In regions like Africa, Asia, and Latin America, informal gig work is widespread, but such roles often lack stability and benefits, deepening economic vulnerability.

The report concludes that rising employment is not enough. Wage growth is lagging behind inflation, and financial insecurity remains entrenched. ADP urges employers and policymakers to adapt — by offering flexible benefits, supporting multi-job workers, investing in upskilling, and ensuring real wage increases — to meet the needs of a workforce under pressure. True financial well-being, the study shows, depends on more than just job numbers.
