In Q1 2025, South Africa saw a drop of 291,000 in employment, bringing the total to 16.8 million. Unemployment rose by 237,000 to 8.2 million, while the labour force shrank slightly by 54,000. The number of discouraged work-seekers grew by 7,000, and those not economically active for other reasons increased by 177,000, raising the inactive population to 16.7 million. As a result, the official unemployment rate rose from 31.9% to 32.9%, while the expanded unemployment rate increased from 41.9% to 43.1%—highlighting a worsening employment situation in the first quarter of the year.

Total employment rose by 12,000 (0.1%) quarter-on-quarter to 10.64 million in December 2024, driven by trade, business services, transport, and electricity, despite declines in community services, manufacturing, construction, and mining. Year-on-year, employment fell by 91,000 (0.8%). Full-time jobs grew by 10,000 (0.1%) and part-time by 2,000 (0.2%) quarter-on-quarter. Gross earnings increased by R59.1 billion (6.1%), driven mainly by bonuses, which rose 85.4%. Basic wages rose 1.1%, while overtime pay dropped 7.7%. Year-on-year, gross earnings rose 3.6%, with bonuses up 3.2% and overtime down 7.1%. Average monthly earnings fell slightly (-0.2%) quarter-on-quarter but grew 5.3% year-on-year.

South Africa’s unemployment rate dropped to 31.9% in Q4 2024, down 0.2 percentage points from Q3 2024. Employment rose by 132,000 to 17.1 million, while unemployment fell by 20,000 to 8.0 million. The labour force grew by 112,000 (0.4%). Discouraged work-seekers increased by 111,000 (3.3%), while those not economically active for other reasons declined by 93,000 (0.7%), leading to a net rise of 18,000 in this group. The expanded unemployment rate remained at 41.9%. These changes indicate modest employment gains but ongoing challenges in labour market participation.

According to the Quarterly Employment Statistics (Q2:2024) by Stats SA, total formal non-agricultural employment increased by 42,000 in Q2 2024, reaching 10.7 million. However, 144,000 jobs were lost between June 2023 and June 2024. The community services sector added 92,000 jobs, while manufacturing and business services lost 12,000 and 14,000 jobs, respectively. Full-time employment decreased by 39,000, while part-time employment rose by 81,000. Gross earnings dropped 0.5% to R952.4 billion, driven by declines in business services and electricity. Basic salaries increased by 2.6%, but bonus payments fell by 33.7%. Overtime payments grew by 4.2%, and average monthly earnings rose by 2.5% quarter-on-quarter, with a 4.8% year-on-year increase.

Employment decreased by 92,000, while unemployment increased by 158,000, bringing the unemployed to 8.4 million. The labor force grew by 66,000, and discouraged work-seekers rose by 147,000 (4.8%). The economically inactive population, excluding the discouraged, dropped by 75,000. Overall, the economically inactive population increased by 72,000, totaling 16.3 million. The expanded unemployment rate reached 42.6%, up 0.7 percentage points from Q1 2024.

Over the past month recruitment activity decreased across most sectors, with the most significant month-on-month decreases experienced in the Finance, Business & Management, and IT sectors. Since the decrease in hiring activity across these sectors is very recent, this trend is not reflected in the three-month analysis.
OfferZen State of the Software Developer Nation 2023
May 2023
The 2023 State of the Developer Nation report by OfferZen found that South African developers are in high demand and are seeing salary increases across the board. Juniors received the biggest increases since last year’s report with an average increase of 19.4%. Seniors saw an average salary increase of 6.2%.
The report also found that the most in-demand programming languages in South Africa are Java, Python, and JavaScript. The most in-demand tech skills are cloud computing, data science, and artificial intelligence.
